Deputies corner fleeing suspect

First he fled from a sheriff's deputy who tried to pull over the car he was driving in the High Point area between Largo and the St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport, authorities said.

Then he forced his way into someone else's apartment to hide.

Then he grabbed some clothes from the apartment and, wearing the stolen garments, tried to slip past the deputies who were searching for him, reported Pinellas County sheriff's deputies.

However determined, Kalvin Glenn Jones ultimately was not successful, officials said.

Jones, 24, of Clearwater, was arrested after an incident that began about 3:23 p.m. Wednesday, officials said. That's when a patrol deputy saw Jones driving a 1988 Cadillac bearing a license tag from another vehicle near the intersection of Russell and Verona avenues.

When the deputy tried to pull Jones over, he ran several stop signs in the residential area, then bailed out of the car and forced his way into an apartment in the 15200 block of Windtree Avenue, officials said.

There, he changed into clothes that belonged to the apartment tenants and walked back out, where deputies had begun to set up a perimeter.

Problem was, the deputy who tried to stop Jones in the first place saw him standing across the street from the apartment, officials said.

Jones, of 15273 Verona Ave., was arrested about 20 minutes after his first encounter with authorities. He was charged with fleeing and attempting to elude, burglary to an occupied dwelling, possession of cocaine and driving with a suspended license. He also received a traffic citation for attaching a tag not assigned to the car he was driving.

He was being held at the Pinellas County Jail Thursday night in lieu of $35,500 bail.
