Par-4, 452 yards
It was not the hardest hole of the day, but the traditionally difficult 15th still caused fits. Japan's Massy Kuramoto was leading when he knocked his tee shot into the water and his third into the hazard, leading to a triple-bogey 7. "I hit two bad shots, but they weren't that bad," Kuramoto said. "My drive went a little left, then I hit my 4-iron well, but a little short. I'm very much happy the way I played other than that." Among the leaders, Keith Fergus and Gary McCord bogeyed the hole, which was the fourth hardest of the day, averaging 4.211 strokes. The hole also had the most double bogeys with five.
SHOT OF THE DAY
Bruce Lietzke's 6-iron second shot to the par-5 12th hole from 188 yards came to a rest 8 feet from the cup, setting up an eagle putt that put him into the lead.
STAT OF THE DAY
After John Mahaffey withdrew Friday morning, officials had to go eight names down the alternate list before they found a player to take his spot. Jim Chancey, who lives in Altamonte Springs, made it in time for the 12:30 p.m. tee time. No other alternate was on site.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
"You have to speak real loud. I played with (Lee) Trevino, and my ears are really ringing. You have to give me some volume. I'm not hearing quite as well as when I started out my round." - Lietzke, who was in the same group as the talkative Trevino.
