Fair to help students and colleges connect

The East Lake High School PTSA is offering a college fair from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the school cafeteria, 1300 Silver Eagle Drive.

The event is free and open to all students in the area and their families. About 75 colleges and universities from throughout the United States are attending. They will meet with prospective students and discuss academic programs, student life, financial considerations and assistance.

Institutions that train students for careers including massage therapy and physical therapy also will attend, as will representatives of the Armed Forces and financial institutions that provide loans for education.

Wendy Sikora, a member of the East Lake High PTSA, said last year's college fair was packed. Her daughter, Ally Sikora, is in 10th grade at East Lake High School. Wendy Sikora said college fairs like this one are frequently held in convention centers of larger cities like Tampa.

"We're pleased to have this at our school," she said. "It's more convenient for parents to go to a neighborhood school. They actually get to talk to the representative, as opposed to looking it up on the Internet or looking at a brochure."
