Inmates have seized control of a prison block at high-security prison holding al-Qaida and Taliban militants in Kabul, Abdul Salaam Bakshi, chief of prisons in Afghanistan, said today.
He said police had the prison, which holds 1,300 inmates, surrounded and no inmates broke out.
The prisoners forced guards out of a block at Policharki Prison during a riot on Saturday night.
AT GUANTANAMO, RELEASE OF NAMES
The Defense Department will comply with a federal judge's order to release the names and nationalities of hundreds of detainees held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, a Pentagon spokesman said Saturday. The decision came in response to a ruling last month by Judge Jed S. Rakoff of U.S. District Court in Manhattan on a lawsuit brought last year by the Associated Press under the Freedom of Information Act. The suit sought to require the Pentagon to release unedited transcripts of military tribunal hearings to determine whether the detainees at Guantanamo had been properly categorized as enemy combatants.
