WHO KNEW?

Outfielder Jonny Gomes said he recently purchased a 2,600-square-foot home in St. Petersburg about a mile from the Naimoli complex.

THUMBS UP

Nothing better than a captive audience. With practice inside because of the weather, manager Joe Maddon and his coaches held player meetings in the Devil Rays' offices. The intimate setting was perfect for scintillating subjects such as the correct way for catchers to signal pitchers.

THUMBS DOWN

The weather improved so quickly, Maddon admitted the team probably could have worked outside. Still, he said, "We have such great facilities to work inside, it was no issue."

WATCH FOR

Or, more to the point, what not to watch for. There will be no live batting practice today.

HE SAID IT

"Well-rested and well-sliced. Don't stand to my right, man. I don't even have a duck hook, just a nasty slice." - manager Joe Maddon, who said he hasn't played golf since late 2004, describing the game he will display at today's charity tournament.

MEDICAL MATTERS

Slow improvement for pitcher Mark Hendrickson (bruised right femur) and a good result for centerfielder Joey Gathright (ingrown hair).
