A 75-year-old Brandon man was jailed after authorities say he shot another man in the stomach with a .22-caliber rifle.
George Walter Wood of 4121 Alafia Blvd. was arrested at his home Sunday afternoon.
Hillsborough sheriff's spokesman J.D. Callaway said Wood got into a shouting match with Andre Robinson over personal belongings. Robinson walked off Wood's property but continued to curse at Wood, according to a sheriff's report.
Wood, holding the rifle, ordered Robinson to go away.
"Or I'll shoot you," Wood said, according to Callaway.
Robinson told Wood to "go ahead," and Wood fired, Callaway said.
There were witnesses to the shooting, Callaway said.
Paramedics took Robinson to Tampa General Hospital, where he underwent surgery. Callaway said Robinson is in his 40s, but his exact age could not be determined.
State and county records show Wood has a history of arrests for driving under the influence that date back to 1973. Most recently, he was sentenced to probation for a March 2002 DUI arrest. He blew twice into a Breathalyzer, which recorded his blood-alcohol level at 0.11 and 0.15, jail records show. Under Florida law, a driver with a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 or higher is considered too impaired to drive.
