She's not just Mrs. Tampa anymore

Published Feb. 28, 2006

Evie Alexopoulos was a three-sport Pinellas high school star who graduated from West Point and became a military police officer and then a volunteer Army recruiter in Tampa. A few months ago she wanted to try something else: beauty queen. A few pictures, a short interview and the title Mrs. Tampa was hers. On Saturday, Alexopoulos, 33, a Wal-Mart manager and mother of four, was crowned Mrs. Florida America in Kissimmee. She wins $1,000 toward an evening gown, trips to New Hampshire and Arizona and all kinds of gift certificates. She competes in the Mrs. America pageant in Arizona in September, which will be shown on the WE network.

Night owls may find

closures on I-275

Fair warning: A short stretch of Interstate 275 through Tampa will be closed Sunday and Monday nights for the installation of electronic message boards that give motorists real-time information on traffic delays, accidents, weather problems and Amber Alerts. Traffic will be detoured to Nebraska Avenue between Hillsborough Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard from 11 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday. During the same hours Monday night and Tuesday morning, traffic will be ushered through that section of highway by police escort. Expect more closures the following week.

A woman who tried last summer to buy the BTK Killer's house in Wichita, Kan., for more than market value said she wanted proceeds to benefit the serial killer's family. The deal never closed, however, and the house remains unsold. A story Sunday was incorrect on these points.
