Owner of Calibrator happy with No. 2 post

Waiting to pick first, Mick D'Arcy kept staring at a particular wrapped box that contained one of eight post-position numbers for the Derby Lane Million.

"It was in the back of the table and it looked excluded from everything," D'Arcy said. "It could have been nothing or an illusion, I don't know. But that was the one I pulled. It couldn't have been better."'

The D'Arcy Kennel owner and trainer selected the No. 2 post position for Greys Calibrator, the probable favorite for Saturday night's championship race, richest in greyhound history.

Post position draws for the Derby Lane Million and Derby Lane Consolation, both Saturday night, were held Wednesday afternoon on the tarmac at Derby Lane. Selections were made by kennel representatives in the order of the qualifying point standings. Both draws were broadcast live at Derby Lane's 500 simulcast outlets and on the Internet.

"Two is perfect for Calibrator," D'Arcy said. "She broke the track record from the two, so she likes it in there."

Greys Calibrator, the only female in the 550-yard final, has plenty of competition for the $500,000 first-place prize. Ebony River (Magic City) drew the No. 1 post. Bob's Skeet, a stakes winner from LaRosa Enterprises, starts from the 3 box.

The rest of the championship field in post position order includes Cajun Cain (Brumage/Filipelli), Sas Mason Jar (Thorne/Herron), Jack Whistler (C & C), Kiowa Cruzechamp (Thorne/Herron) and Joe Hearns (Floyd & Porter).

Entries for the Derby Lane Consolation in post position order feature Flying Nitrogen (McAllister), Em's Darla (Floyd & Porter), Greys Huntington (Lester Raines), Extruding Dream (Magic City), Your Lucky Charm (Magic City), Kiowa Cruze Thru (Thorne/Herron), Mayor Daley (Ryan Farms) and Oh Well Whocares (C & C).

The Derby Lane Million will be the 12th and final race Saturday night. The Derby Lane Consolation will be Race 10. Effective today, there is advanced wagering on the Derby Lane Million.
