Fans got their first glimpse of St. Petersburg's Winky Wright and Jeff Lacy on Tuesday night as the fighters took part in an open nighttime workout on the West Plaza at the St. Pete Times Forum.
But the star was Oscar De La Hoya, whose Golden Boy Promotions is co-promoting Saturday's fight card along with Wright's Winky Promotions.
De La Hoya, who has won titles in six weight classes and is arguably the most popular name in boxing, signed autographs for the hundreds of fans lined up to watch the workout.
It was the closest De La Hoya has been to the ring in Tampa since fighting here in 1991.
As a promising amateur, De La Hoya took part in the World Championships Challenge at the Tampa Convention Center. Fighting at 132 pounds, De La Hoya knocked out Jose Martinez, a Puerto Rican high school student, in the fourth round.
"I was supposed to fight against Cuba, but ended up fighting a Puerto Rican fighter and knocked him out,'' De La Hoya said. "It was fun. I had a good time."
IN AND OUT: Lacy, who meets Vitali Tsypko in his first action since Joe Calzaghe beat him and took his IBF super middleweight title, worked out about five minutes before doing some television interviews, telling the cameras, "If you liked what you saw my last fight here (a knockout of Robin Reid), you'll like what you see Saturday.''
Lacy declined comment to the print media.
