All-stars gear up for RayJay, recruiters

Ninety of Hillsborough's finest high school football players will line up Saturday at Raymond James Stadium for the sixth annual Hillsborough County East-West All-Star game.

The game, kicking off at 7 p.m., will give local fans another opportunity to watch Division-I bound seniors like Jefferson's Stephen Garcia and Middleton's Sherod Murdock compete. And it will give college recruiters a chance to look at county players who might be flying on the radar.

"College recruiters are looking for quality kids, and we're trying to showcase those players," West all-star and Robinson coach Mike DePue said. Former Tampa Bay Tech coach Clarence Higdon will coach the East squad. "The coaches show up for the game but more so for the practices. It gives them an opportunity to eyeball the kids and get to know them."

Each 45-player squad, which will practice together five times before Saturday's game, has a minimum of two players from each county school; the rest were determined by DePue and Higdon and their respective coaching staffs.

Plant, facing Washington on Friday in the state semifinal, is the only team not represented.

Both coaches have agreed to use 4-3 defenses. There will be no blitz packages, and rushing the punter or kicker is not allowed.

Don't expect that, however, to limit the intensity on the field.

"We expect a high quality of play - you're going to have the best from each team," DePue said. "A lot of times, these games are dominated by defense.

"But, we're going to throw it around and have a little fun, too, that and make sure the game is injury-free."
