Springstead High School band director Rick Dasher is proud of his marching band, which placed third in its class and 12th overall at the recent state finals at Tropicana Field. There were 82 bands in five classes. The school's percussion section took high honors. Springstead's cheerleaders will perform in the nationally televised Walt Disney World Christmas Day Parade. Last year, they were among eight teams selected, This year, the field was narrowed to four. The cheerleaders will do a street performance from the Disney Channel movie High School Musical. The performance can also be seen Christmas morning.


Two schools get Five Star award

Pine Grove and Brooksville Elementary Schools earned the Florida Department of Education's highest award for community involvement: the Five Star School Award. It is given annually to schools showing exemplary community involvement. To qualify, a school must document its achievements in business partnerships, family involvement, volunteers, student community service and School Advisory Councils. Both schools will display Five Star School banners.


And the Employee of the Year is ...

The School Board chose the 2006 School-Related Employee of the Year: Kim Brownell of the Adult Education Department. Many schools hold canned food drives in December. Call your school for information about their program.


Breakfast with Santa at Central

Central High School's band boosters' Breakfast with Santa is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the school. The public is invited for hot breakfast and live holiday music for a $5 cost. Talk on AP classes, dual enrollment

Hernando, Central, Nature Coast and Springstead high schools will make a joint presentation at 7 tonight at Parrott Middle School, discussing advanced placement and dual enrollment programs that allow students to take courses for possible college credit. Contact Dave Schoelles, 797-7070, ext. 433.
