Two glamor QBs up for Camp honor

Troy Smith of Ohio State and Brady Quinn of Notre Dame are among the five finalists for the Walter Camp Football Foundation player of the year award.

Smith and Quinn are joined by West Virginia running back Steve Slaton, Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan and Arkansas running back Darren McFadden, the foundation said Wednesday.

The winner will be announced Dec. 7 after a vote by 119 Division I-A coaches and sports information directors. The trophy will be presented Dec. 13.

ACC AWARDS: Georgia Tech receiver Calvin Johnson was named ACC player of the year and Clemson defense end Gaines Adams was named top defensive player by the AP.

COTTON BOWL: The loser of Saturday's Big 12 title game between Oklahoma and Nebraska will play in Dallas on New Year's Day.

HOLIDAY BOWL: Texas A&M accepted an invitation to face California Dec. 28 in San Diego.

GMAC BOWL: Ohio will play its first bowl since 1968 on Jan. 7 in Mobile, Ala., against the loser of Friday's Conference USA championship game between Houston and Southern Miss.

GEORGIA: Backup offensive lineman Ian Smith was suspended indefinitely by coach Mark Richt after Smith's second arrest in less than a year on alcohol-related charges.

UCLA: Patrick Cowan, who has started the past six games, will start at quarterback Saturday against Southern Cal.
