The West team, led by Jefferson quarterback Stephen Garcia's two touchdowns (one rushing, one passing), jumped in front early and never let up in a 40-21 victory over the East in the sixth Hillsborough County East-West All-Star game at Raymond James Stadium.
Garcia, who was 3-for-7 passing for 36 yards and had seven carries for 54 yards, opened the scoring with an 11-yard touchdown to Middleton's Andres Harris on the West's second drive.
Garcia added a touchdown run from 7 yards midway through the third quarter to put the West up 33-14. The senior was named offensive MVP for the West.
"Both teams performed real well," West coach Mike DePue of Robinson said. "This is the most points I've ever seen in an all-star game. These kids got after it tonight.''
Brandon's Mike Brown had two spectacular runs that earned him East offensive MVP honors. On his third carry, Brown juked two defenders on a sweep to the left, cut back to the middle and outraced the defense for an 80-yard touchdown that cut the West lead to 14-7.
He also returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown at the beginning of the third quarter right after the West's Sherod Murdock (Middleton) returned the opening second-half kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. Brown's return made it 20-14.
On the ensuing West drive, T.J. Paratore (Jesuit) found Ryan Davis (Blake) for a 35-yard touchdown and a 13-point lead. Garcia's touchdown run later in the quarter iced it for the West.
Freedom's Josh Lee intercepted two passes in the first half and was named the West's defensive MVP. Terrel Hicks of Wharton picked off a pass in the second quarter to help earn the East defensive MVP award.
