Neighborhood events calendar


Town 'N Country Youth Council: The monthly meeting will be from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at West Gate Regional Library, Paula Drive. The teen board meeting will follow at 3:30 p.m. Refreshments are served. Membership is open to Town 'N Country residents, ages 12 to 17, who are attending school. Dues are $5 each January and July. Friends of the Lutz Library: The group will meet at 7 p.m. at the Lutz Branch Library, 101 Lutz-Lake Fern Road. Dr. John Belohlavek, professor of history at the University of South Florida, will speak on the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Light refreshments will be served. Carrollwood Business Networking Association: The weekly breakfast meeting will be from 7:45 to 9:15 a.m. Marilyn Rumore, of Rumore Appraisals, will be the speaker. Friends of UTB Regional Library: The monthly meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Upper Tampa Bay Regional Library, 11211 Countryway Blvd. Joe Stines, director of Library Services, and local artist Virginia Larrea-Latourette will be the guest speakers. CABA Coffee: The Carrollwood Area Business Association will have its networking event from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Linda Smith Nelson and Roseann Trivento will host the free event at Brighton Gardens, 16702 N Dale Mabry Highway. Call (813) 264-0006.

Visitor Inspiration Program: The Children's Home will host its monthly program from 1 to 2 p.m. There will be a tour of the campus, and information will be provided about programs and services. The Children's Home is at 10909 Memorial Highway. Reservations are required. Call (813) 864-1536.

Weight reduction program: The wellness seminar will be offered from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The program will be at University Community Hospital, 3100 E Fletcher Ave. The seminar combines a hypnotic session with behavior modification. The first 45-minute session is free. If participants feel comfortable with the program, they pay a one-time fee of $69. Save $10 by registering at Reservations are not required. The fee includes a behavior modification booklet, home reinforcement audiocassette tape (CDs are available) and unlimited free repetitions of the hypnosis, if needed. New Tampa Rotary Club: Debbie Rogers, principal at Liberty Middle School, will speak at the 7 a.m. weekly breakfast meeting. Rogers will discuss progress being made at the school and will describe its mentoring program. Summer intern program: College undergraduates and college-bound high school graduates are encouraged to apply for this program by Feb. 15. H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute at USF is accepting applications for its 2007 Summer Program for the Advancement of Research Knowledge (SPARK). Students pursuing a career in biomedical science are eligible for this opportunity to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer. Moffitt faculty will conduct weekly seminars which will be integrated directly into the cancer center's laboratories. Interns will plan and conduct real scientific studies while gaining experience in daily research. The program includes 40 hours a week for 10 weeks; students earn a stipend. Women and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply; 15-20 students will be selected for the program. Call (813) 745-3887.

Mindfulness-based meditation: Lisa V. Roe, a meditation instructor and certified yoga teacher, will lead the class. Free classes, to help relieve holiday stress, will be offered from 9:30 to 11 a.m. each Monday during the month of December. Previous meditation experience is not necessary.
