Panthers following plan all the way to state final

Before Friday's Class 4A state semifinal, Plant coach Bob Weiner, being the never-leave-anything-to-chance person he is, made up an itinerary schedule for this week - the one in preparation for Saturday's state final in Miami.

"I didn't tell the team that I (made an itinerary), but when we won (20-15 over Miami Washington) I wanted to go right back in the locker room, and right after the victory speech I wanted to hand out the state championship itinerary to them," Weiner said as thousands of Plant fans cheered in Dad's Stadium. "Preparation, you know, you have to be prepared.

"I also wanted them to know I really thought we would win."

Printed on Plant Panthers Football letterhead, the itinerary begins: "For state championship week, Miami, Florida - Dolphins Stadium, Game day: 9 December 2006, 1 p.m."

After a few lines on what coaches would do Sunday, Monday starts with "7:20 a.m.-2:45 p.m.: School - do not miss any classes/keep up with your work."

After that are 72 lines of instruction divided among the six day headings. Some lines include, "Friday, Dec. 8: 9:50-10 a.m. - Load buses with players: defense and offense (light, quiet talking on the bus)," and, "4:30-6 p.m. - dinner: "What does Plant football mean to me?"

On Saturday, game day, the itinerary begins: "6:30-7 a.m. -Wake up and morning prep for the greatest day of your life," and follows with 15 items until the part where Weiner had made his only mistake on the sheet. From 1 p.m.-3:30 p.m. it reads, "GAME TIME/BEAT BOOKER T. WASHINGTON TORNADOES."

"I guess maybe I was still focused on beating Washington," Weiner said. "Of course that really was the priority at that moment."

On Saturday the mistake was marked out and written over by everyone. Now it reads, "GAME TIME/BEAT Nease Panthers."

Then the itinerary reads:

"3:30-4:30 p.m. - Celebrate STATE CHAMPIONSHIP on field/medallions/trophy.''

But what if, hypothetically, Plant loses?

"All I can say," Weiner said, "is that we are doing everything we can to prepare for victory.''
