Police arrested a 16-year-old Friday who they believe was responsible for at least eight armed robberies since October and possibly as many as 20.
Dwayne Robert Scott, of 600 16th Ave. S, was arrested on eight armed robbery charges and booked into the Pinellas County Jail. He is being prosecuted as an adult.
Detectives, with the help of Scott's family and neighborhood acquaintances, initially linked Scott to Wednesday's robbery of Stop Drive-Thru Express, 1931 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. S.
In a photograph taken during the robbery, the suspect's face was partly covered with a knit cap. But several people identified the suspect as Scott.
The teen was later arrested with the help of his guardian, his stepmother. Police said Scott confessed to eight robberies and one unreported robbery of a Blue Star Cab Co. driver.
Errol Francis, president of Blue Star Cab, said he is relieved Scott has been arrested.
In the last month, he said five of his taxi cab drivers have been robbed. Some of them are so scared, they refuse to drive at night. But with Scott's arrest, Francis said he thinks the robberies will decline.
The other south St. Petersburg businesses that were robbed are: 7-Eleven, Snax Food Store, McDonald's, Mastry Tackle, Fourth Street Mart and Domino's Pizza.
