An admitted member of the notorious Sur 13 gang was arrested Saturday night in Plant City after stabbing a gas station clerk in the stomach during a robbery, authorities said.
Carlos Santiago, a 24-year-old Dover carpenter who has "SUR" and "XIII" tattooed on his hands, remained in jail Sunday without bail, charged with three counts of armed robbery and one count of first-degree attempted murder.
According to a Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office arrest report, Santiago first robbed the gas station at 3801 Paul Buchman Highway on Nov. 8. He threatened a clerk with a knife and left with $600.
On Nov. 27, deputies said, Santiago robbed the M&M Food Store at 3705 Sam Allen Road with a knife and got away with more than $300.
Saturday, Santiago hit the gas station again, authorities said. Then, deputies say, he attacked the clerk, stabbed him in the stomach and chased him around the store with the knife.
Witnesses restrained Santiago until deputies arrived. Santiago admitted to all of the offenses and told deputies he had been in the Sur 13 gang for the last nine years, the report states.
Sheriff's Office spokesman J.D. Callaway said Sunday that the clerk, Nimish Patel, is recovering from serious, but non-life threatening injuries.
