Mahr turns in real gem of a season

Traditionally, the 30th anniversary is the pearl anniversary.

Chances are you won't see Jason Mahr strolling around sporting a pearl necklace this week, but after pitching his 30th career perfect game recently, he might want to think about it.

Mahr's 300 was his third of the 2006-07 season, putting him first in the county in that area. He is one ahead of perhaps his top competition for top area bowler, Rich Garner.

His series in the Tuesday Singles League at Mariner Lanes led the county last week. To go with his first 300 game, he shot a second game 258 and a third game 211 for a 769 scratch series. Mahr also has three 800 series this season, with two coming in the county to lead that statistic also.

HEARL JOINS THE 300 CLUB: After tying for the county lead with three perfect games in 2005-06, Jimmy Hearl tossed his first 300 of this season during the Gator High Rollers League recently at Spring Hill Lanes.

Hearl tied with Olsen and Walter Dry for the most 300s in the county last season and now finds himself back in the hunt along with the usual suspects.

Along with the rest of the Gator High Rollers League, Hearl has found the lanes somewhat difficult to navigate. With an inconsistency in the oil patterns up and down the center, averages have been down across the board. That makes Hearl's fifth career perfect game all the more impressive.

UPCOMING TOURNEY: The 14th annual S&J Scholarship Tournament is scheduled for this weekend at Spring Hill Lanes.

The youth tournament will be carried out in two shifts with the first starting at 10 a.m. and the second starting at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Entry fees are $25 per bowler with a $5 late fee assessed to all walk-ins.

There are three handicap divisions with the A division including averages of 165 plus, the B division including averages of 111-164 and the C division including averages of 110 and below. First place in each division will receive a $500 guaranteed scholarship. Guaranteed scholarships also will be awarded to bowlers who finish from second place to eighth in each of the three divisions.

Last season's winner for the A Division was Spring Hill regular Brandon Curley, who also tossed his first career perfect game this season.
