MCCARTHY HONORED: Apparently, Plant's astounding success isn't confined to the current team. Former Panthers all-state defensive end Kevin McCarthy Jr., a 2006 graduate, was among five collegians honored Tuesday night in New York as a 2006 National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Award winner.

Among the most prestigious awards bestowed to prep football players, it is presented annually to one player from each of five national regions and based on academic achievement, athletic performance and exemplary leadership.

Currently a student at the University of Florida, McCarthy overcame the untimely death of his dad, former Robinson principal Kevin McCarthy Sr., three years ago to excel academically and athletically. He finished second academically in his class (with a weighted 7.28 grade point average) and earned the Jimbo Kynes Award as the county's top lineman.

McCarthy was honored Monday with the other recipients at the NFF's 49th annual Awards Dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria, where FSU coach Bobby Bowden was among those inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

TAYLOR HONORED: Plant volleyball coach Leanna Taylor, recently named Florida Dairy Farmers Class 5A coach of the year, finished fourth in voting for the overall state coach of the year honor announced Tuesday. Taylor led the Panthers to a 28-2 mark and the program's fourth state title in six years.
