New strategies for Iraq

Robert Gates, the White House's choice to be the next secretary of defense, told senators at his confirmation hearing Tuesday: "What we are now doing (in Iraq) is not satisfactory." On a day when three more U.S. troops were reported killed along with dozens of Iraqis, Gates was not alone in his concerns: Senators on the Armed Services Committee unanimously endorsed him to replace Donald Rumsfeld, who has become a symbol of the Bush administration's steadfast course in the war.
