Tweaks, then high scores

With the renovations at Neffer's Bowl in Homosassa almost finished, league bowlers are starting to find their respective grooves on the lanes.

"We've been tinkering with the oil machine for a few weeks now," said Neffer's general manager Steve McCullough. "Now that we have a consistent pattern going, the bowlers are getting used to it and the scores are rising."

A prime example of this was Dick Hover and the rest of the Wednesday Night Men's League recently.

Hover shot a 299 high scratch game to lead the county while also finishing with a 747 series. The game was his highest effort since 1999 when he was competing at Midway Lanes in Endicott, N.Y. It was his second U.S. Bowling Congress achievement at Neffer's. On another occasion, Hover tossed a 290 on Dec. 10, 2003.

Success was not Hover's alone in that league though. Grant Zachary shot a 733 series with a 267 high game. Matt Briggs shot a 266 high game to go along with his 668 series.

EARLY-MONTH 300: Richard Lieval, a regular at Beverly Hills Bowl, recently shot his first career perfect game.

During the Pine Ridge Mixed Foursome League on Oct. 26, Lieval shot a 667 series with a second game 300 sandwiched in between a 184 in the first game and a 183 in the third game.

Lieval was a 197 bowler by USBC average at Beverly Hills Bowl last season, and this season he continues to add to that resume. He competes in two sanctioned leagues at Beverly Hills and the Wednesday Nite Men's Handicap League at Parkview Lanes in Holder.

Before moving to Florida in 1999, he competed in leagues in Valley Cottage, N.Y., with the Rockland County USBC chapter, but he never was able to garner a single honor score until this prestigious 300.

GOLF N' BOWL: The monthly Rizzo's Pizza Golf N' Bowl Tournament hosted by Parkview Lanes and Twisted Oaks Country Club had another successful run two weeks ago.

The foursome of John Saltsmarsh, 2, Marvin Brigner and Dennis Brinker took first place after sweeping the top honors in both the golfing and bowling events. The team finished at 1-under par for the round of golf and two pins ahead in bowling with a total of 848.

There was a tie for second as Ace and 2, Chris Helton and Bobby Craft took second in the bowling and third in the golf while Cheryl Lovely, Michael Parker, Lenny Oakeson and George Marks took second in the golf and third in the bowling.

The next Rizzo's Pizza Golf N' Bowl Tournament is scheduled for Sunday.
