Wesley Chapel 68, Central 32
Wesley Chapel got another statement win on Tuesday as well as a record performance.
Since losing to Mitchell on opening night, Wesley Chapel had shown its dominance by winning five straight, including Tuesday's 68-32 win over Central.
The Wildcats (5-1, 2-0 Class 5A-7) were led by team captain Sthefany Thomas. Needing only nine points to become Pasco County's all-time leading scorer, Thomas netted 19 for the Wildcats. She now has 1,880 career points, besting former Pasco standout Jackie Pugh's mark of 1,869.
"I didn't even remember about the record during the game, but when Coach (Warren Jones) pulled me out in the end, he said, 'congratulations,' " Thomas said. "It still hasn't really hit me yet."
Thomas only played three quarters because of Wesley Chapel's significant lead.
Her effort was aided heavily by teammates Ashley Carey and Desiree Vizcaino. Vizcaino led the Wildcats in assists with eight while Carey added 14 points and seven rebounds.
Down by 25 at halftime, Central (5-4, 0-3) continued to give maximum effort with reserve center Tikeisi Relaford leading the way. She struggled offensively, but with 10 rebounds and three steals, she kept many possessions alive.
The Bears' leading scorer was reserve guard Cortney Gray. While playing limited minutes in the second and fourth quarters, she knocked down four 3-pointers for 12 points.
