Gators a couple of pigskin all-stars

Land O'Lakes standouts Joe Weatherford and Develin Robinson were selected to play in the FACA All-Star Game Dec. 22 in Lakeland.

Weatherford will miss the game because he will be in China for three weeks beginning Dec. 18. The senior quarterback took an official visit to UCF and will visit Toledo and Western Michigan this weekend, Land O'Lakes coach John Benedetto said.

Robinson will play for the North team and will miss the final week of school before winter break with practice slated to begin Dec. 17 in Lakeland.

'I think it's great," Benedetto said of the game "It's a heck of a game. We were there last year to see Caz (Piurowski) play.

ROYAL KNIGHTS TO HOST STATE: River Ridge will host the 2007 state girls weightlifting finals Feb. 10 in the gymnasium.

Royal Knights coach Mike DeGennaro said he put in a bid to host in September after a few Pasco County coaches urged him to bring the finals here. DeGennaro hosted a pair of boys weightlifting finals in the early 1990s.

"I think it's good for the kids to see," DeGennaro said. "That's why I wanted to bring it local. Anyone interested in weightlifting and fitness should come and watch it."

LIONS' BRICK WALL: Saint Leo sophomore Lauren Hudson was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas all-South Region second team Wednesday. Junior teammates Jennifer O'Connor, a midfielder, and defender Lizzie Seedhouse made the first team.

"It's great, because none of them are seniors," Saint Leo coach Ged O'Connor said. "We should, hopefully, get the same sort of output from them next year."

Hudson, a four-time all-Sunshine Athletic Conference player at Mitchell, where she backstopped the Mustangs to three district titles, went 8-3-2 with a 1.24 goals-against average as a Saint Leo freshman. This fall, Hudson played every game, setting school records for wins (14-3-2) and shutouts (11). She also became the team's first keeper to have assists (two) and score (on a penalty kick).

O'Connor finished second in team scoring with seven goals and 17 points. Seedhouse had a goal and three points.

BISHOP CROWNED: Florida's Stacy Bishop, the former Land O'Lakes striker and county's all-time goal scorer (192), made the NSCAA All-American third team in Division I. A junior, Bishop led the Gators in scoring with 12 goals and 30 points. An all-Southeastern Conference first-teamer, she also had six winning goals.

FOOTBALL COMBINE: The county's third annual high school football combine is Saturday at Gulf, beginning at 9 a.m. It is open to players from Pasco, Hernando, Hillsborough and Pinellas.

Gulf coach Jay Fulmer and speed trainer Rob Oppedisano will oversee athletes in speed, strength and agility drills. Results and player information will be distributed to college coaches throughout the southeast.
