Lakewood senior quarterback Corey Henderson played with a heavy heart Wednesday night.
His grandmother, Louella Bradberry, passed away the night before the Pinellas All-Star Classic.
Henderson responded by throwing two fourth-quarter touchdowns to Pinellas Park's Quinton King to help lead the South to a 31-7 win over the North at Clearwater High.
"The South train came through," Henderson said. "It was just a little delayed."
Some sights and sounds from the game:
CHALK TALK: King said he and Henderson spoke at halftime after discovering a glitch in the North's secondary. King (three catches, 87 yards), the game's MVP, scored both of his TDs on corner routes.
BOOM!: Small-school players delivered two of the biggest hits. With the North driving late in the third quarter, Keswick Christian's Kenny Shorter popped Countryside receiver Matt Mooney, breaking up a catch near the 10-yard line. Then, in the fourth, Admiral Farragut's Kreg Brown leveled Mooney in kickoff coverage.
TARPON TWOSOME: Tarpon Springs seniors Calvin Wood and Marquise Gamble turned some heads. Wood (38 rushing yards) had a 53-yard reception, and Gamble broke free for a 58-yard kick return. Gamble, a shutdown corner, is being recruited by several SEC schools, including Ole Miss and Auburn.
JOHNNY-ON-THE-SPOT: Northeast defensive back Cortez Gathright forced a fumble in the third quarter, recovered by Dixie Hollins' Jamar McKinney (setting up the South's second touchdown, a 3-yard run by Osceola's Sergio Allen). Then, in the fourth, Gathright intercepted a pass, which led to a 25-yard field goal by Admiral Farragut's David Gans.
TRUE TO HIS SCHOOL: Countryside quarterback L.D. Crow (11-of-21, 156 yards, two INTs) connected with Clearwater Central Catholic receiver Chris Campbell for an 11-yard score on the North's opening drive. Crow said he is keeping his commitment to Stanford, though coach Walt Harris was fired this week.
