Shuffling Maddnes rallied past 1-5 favorite Accountforthegold for an upset victory Sunday in the $107,400 Evan Shipman Handicap for New York-breds.
With Cornelio Velasquez aboard, the 4-year-old earned the biggest win of his career at 24-1.
Accountforthegold had been a dominant horse in New York-bred stakes this season. He appeared to be headed for another win after opening a clear lead at the top of the stretch. Shuffling Maddnes, last in the six-horse field for much of the race, used a strong closing move down the center of the track to beat the favorite by 3-1/4 lengths. It was his fifth win in 19 career starts. The time was 1 minute, 41.54 seconds for the 11/16 miles on the fast track.
The Shipman was the track's closing day feature.
