It's Florida. That means it's never too early to start thinking about football. Rise magazine, pretty much the authority on prep sports, has come out with its preseason rankings, and these are its top-five teams in the country: 1. Miami Northwestern; 2. Southlake (Texas) Carroll; 3. Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, Calif.); 4. St. Xavier (Cincinnati); 5. Summerville (S.C.).
Player of the day
Well, because we're already talking about prep football, who is considered the top player in the country? Rise magazine calls Jeannette (Pa.) quarterback Terrelle Pryor the nation's best player. He's a giant at 6-feet-6, 220 pounds. Last season, he threw for 1,720 yards and 15 TDs, while rushing for 1,709 yards and 27 scores. Pryor wants to play football and basketball in college, and considering Florida is the defending national champion in both sports ... I'm just saying.
Rumor of the day
Say it ain't true. The New York Post reported that because Jim Balsillie, the Blackberry founder who tried to buy the Penguins and Predators, would make such a good owner, the NHL is considering expanding. Balsillie would get a team in Hamilton, Ontario, and Kansas City would get a team, too. Problem is, the NHL would be better off dropping a few teams.
