The Orioles held an extensive pregame ceremony honoring Hall of Fame-bound Cal Ripken, delaying Tuesday's start time until 7:40. Featured guests included current Hall of Famers Eddie Murray, Robin Roberts, Brooks Robinson and Earl Weaver.
And did you know?
Manager Joe Maddon had a great view as Angels first-base coach when Ripken broke Lou Gehrig's games played streak on Sept. 6, 1995, but he was more concerned about blowing the division lead. "You know you're part of history in a sense, but quite frankly I wasn't interested in that."
And did you know?
Ripken played in 2,632 consecutive regular-season games. The Rays, in their 10th season, on Tuesday played their 1,554th game. They will reach 2,632 sometime in 2014.

Watch for ...
Sonny time: Rays rookie starter Andy Sonnanstine, above, has lost five straight, but he hasn't pitched that badly. Plus, three times he left with the lead and the bullpen blew it. Home runs have been a problem, as he has allowed 11 in nine starts.
Erik the great: Orioles starter Erik Bedard has developed into one of the game's top lefties (leading the majors in strikeouts and ranking fifth in the AL in ERA). Against the Rays he is 8-3 with a 2.96 ERA in 17 games. He is particularly tough on Carl Crawford (.214, 9-for-42 with 14 strikeouts). Delmon Young is 0-for-9 and B.J. Upton 3-for-16.
All right: The Rays are 12-17 against left-handed starters (26-32 vs. right-handers) and have hit nearly 20 points higher as a team against lefties.
