Skateboarders' days of being relegated to parking lots and abandoned properties are long gone. These days, taxpayers help finance special facilities just for the wheeled set. A look at those public parks in North Pinellas County, all of which are outdoor facilities.

Palm Harbor

Greater Palm Harbor YMCA Branch, 1600 16th St., Palm Harbor. (727) 787-9622.

Cost: YMCA members free. Skatepark pass available for $5 for non-members and pass holders. Helmets, elbow pads, knee and wrist guards required.

Hours: Monday though Friday: 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Sunday: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The facility is bikes-only Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Park size: 10,000 square feet.

Obstacles: 4-foot quarter pipe, a pyramid with fun boxes and rails, a mission control center with stairs and rails spread out over a smooth concrete surface.


Ross Norton Recreation and Aquatic Complex and Extreme Sports Park, 1426 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., Clearwater; (727) 462-6025

Cost: $2 with recreation card, $4 without. Helmet and signed liability waiver required.

Hours: Monday through Friday: 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturdays: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sundays: Noon to 5 p.m.

Bikes permitted on Tuesday: 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Park size: 30,000 square feet.

Obstacles: Six quarter pipes, a half pipe, multiple rails, stairs and a six-stair handrail, grind boxes, plastic benches and wedges.

Amenities: Bleachers, shaded picnic tables, water fountain, bathrooms, vending machines, pro shop.


Bicentennial Park, 423 Lafayette Blvd. (813) 749-1290

Cost: Free with recreation card, $5.35 otherwise. Helmets, wrist guards, elbow and knee pads required.

Hours: Monday through Friday: 2 to 9 p.m.; Saturday: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Features: The 2,400-square-foot outdoor facility features a 6-foot quarter pipe, a 5-foot quarter pipe, a 3-foot quarter pipe, a pyramid with flat rails and a couple other ramps all set up on top of a smooth riding surface. The park is fenced and lighted.


Highland Recreation Complex, 400 Highland Ave.; (727) 518-3016.

Cost: Free with a signed liability waiver on file. Helmet required.

Hours: Monday through Friday: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Sunday: Noon to 6 p.m.

Park size: 14,000 square feet.

Obstacles: 6-foot tall half pipe, fun boxes with rails, a 6-foot quarter-pipe, a roll-in ramp, a flat rail and round rail, a steep bank and more.

Amenities: Covered bleachers, water fountain, lights.

Safety Harbor

Safety Harbor Community Center, 650 Ninth Ave S. (727) 724-1530.

Cost: Annual pass $30 for residents; $45 for nonresidents with a signed liability waiver. Weekly pass: $2 for residents; $3 nonresidents. Helmet required.

Hours: Monday through Friday: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday: Noon to 6 p.m.

Park size: 6,000 square feet.

Obstacles: 10 challenging pieces including three quarter pipes of differing sizes, a 4-foot miniramp, an 8-foot-long straight grind rail and a mission control center, a skate playhouse of stairs and ramps and rails.

Amenities: The park is fenced and lighted.
