CITRUS PARK COMES OUT SWINGING AT STATE

Citrus Park opened the 10-11 Little League state baseball tournament in resounding fashion, defeating Dr. Phillips 12-0 Friday at Pinellas Park National in a game shortened to four innings due to the run rule.

Citrus Park plays Cocoa Beach today at noon and Tallahassee's Chaires-Capitola at 5 p.m. The top two teams from each four-team pool advance to Sunday's semifinal.

Citrus Park sent 12 to the plate in the first inning, scoring nine runs. Nine of the first 10 batters came around to score. Wyatt Reid went 3-for-3, pacing Citrus Park's eight-hit attack. Mike McGuire connected for a two-run homer and Danny Lastra doubled in a pair of runs. Kevin Merrell and Reid combined on the mound to hold Dr. Phillips to four hits, striking out five.

JUNIOR SOFTBALL: Palma Ceia/Tampa Bay/Interbay defeated Casselberry 20-0 in the opening game of the state tournament. The five-inning game saw patience at the plate on the part of PC/TB/IB as 16 batters walked and six were hit by a pitch. Tyler Riendeau earned the win, combining with Kaitlyn Steckel and Caitlyn Cozart to strike out seven in the shutout win. PC/TB/IB plays Deland today at 10:30 at Bloomingdale.
