Free wind inspections available for some

The My Safe Florida Home program is offering free wind inspections by qualified hurricane mitigation inspectors to eligible homeowners.

To qualify for the inspection and possibly receive a matching grant, residents must apply to the Florida Department of Financial Services. Homes that have undergone wind certification and hurricane mitigation inspections approved by the DFS may be eligible to apply for matching grants up to $5,000.

Eligibility for a matching grant includes living within the designated "wind-borne debris area," which in Hernando County is within 1 mile of the coast. Also, requesting or obtaining an inspection does not guarantee or automatically qualify for a grant.

For information, call Hernando County Emergency Management Department at 754-4083 or visit the Web site at www.mysafefloridahome.com.
