FORMER COACH CHARGED WITH EMBEZZLEMENT

Former UNLV guard Mark Wade has been charged with embezzling more than $15,000 in his former job as an assistant coach at UC Riverside.

Wade, 41, was fired Jan. 5 after nearly two years at the Division I school, university spokeswoman Kris Lovekin said Friday.

The Riverside County district attorney's office has issued an arrest warrant for Wade on one count of felony embezzlement. He was charged in Riverside Superior Court on July 12, the same day the warrant was issued.

Wade is accused of depositing into his personal bank account the proceeds from two university checks and one electronic fund transfer, according to the warrant.

Some of the money was supposed to cover team expenses during road games during the 2006 Christmas break, court documents show. Wade never arrived on campus or traveled with the team during the holiday break, the warrant said.

Wade could not provide documentation for how he spent a cash advance for travel that he received in November 2006. The university also was forced to write off a past due balance on Wade's university credit card.

Athletics director Stan Morrison declined to talk about Wade.

"It's a university matter," he said.

Wade was a standout guard at UNLV from 1985-87 and helped the Runnin' Rebels reach the 1987 Final Four. His 18 assists against Indiana in the national semifinals is still the NCAA Tournament record.

He played for the NBA's Golden State Warriors in 1988 and played one game for the Dallas Mavericks in 1990.

Wade began his coaching career in 1995 at Long Island-Southhampton. He was director of basketball operations at UNLV in 2000 and had stints at Florida Atlantic and St. Bonaventure.
