Virginia (2-0) scored a run in the second and third innings and relied on defense to hold off North Carolina (1-1) 2-1 at the Little League Southern Regional tournament Saturday.

In the second inning, Virginia's MacKenzie Eppard scored from third base while North Carolina tried to appeal for an out at second.

"On that play with two outs they didn't call timeout," Virginia manager Ronnie Dovel said. "I was just going to take a chance because I knew it was going to be a tight game."

In the third inning Chase Raynes singled and was driven in on a run-scoring single by Haley Life, who went 2-for-3.

Raynes earned the win, allowing seven hits and striking out four.

"(Raynes) pitched great today," Dovel said. "All we asked her was to pitch strikes and let the team hit the ball."
