Virginia (2-0) scored a run in the second and third innings and relied on defense to hold off North Carolina (1-1) 2-1 at the Little League Southern Regional tournament Saturday.
In the second inning, Virginia's MacKenzie Eppard scored from third base while North Carolina tried to appeal for an out at second.
"On that play with two outs they didn't call timeout," Virginia manager Ronnie Dovel said. "I was just going to take a chance because I knew it was going to be a tight game."
In the third inning Chase Raynes singled and was driven in on a run-scoring single by Haley Life, who went 2-for-3.
Raynes earned the win, allowing seven hits and striking out four.
"(Raynes) pitched great today," Dovel said. "All we asked her was to pitch strikes and let the team hit the ball."
WEST VIRGINIA 6, PALMA CEIA/TAMPA BAY/INTERBAY 4: West Virginia (1-1) capitalized on a five-run third inning to defeat Florida's representative Palma Ceia/Tampa Bay/Interbay (0-2).
Alex Ellis, Mallory Pertee, Kali Martin, Cassie Weaver and Lindsey Spaulding each singled and scored in the third with Weaver and Spaulding earning RBIs. Alyssa Morris also had an RBI.
For PC/TB/IB, Blair Martin and Alexis Jackson each hit RBI doubles and Natalie Franklin was 2-for-3.
TENNESSEE 8, ALABAMA 0: Tennessee improved to 1-1 in the day's opening game, defeating Alabama (0-2). Kirsten Honeycutt went 3-for-3 with a run scored and Britney Turner had three RBIs.
SOUTH CAROLINA 13, GEORGIA 7: South Carolina used 13 hits to score 13 runs in the final game to defeat Georgia 13-7. Alyssa Davis and Carley Hoover each went 3-for-4, with Davis scoring three runs and Hoover scoring twice. Both had an RBI. Brianna Davis added to the offense, going 2-for-2 with a run and two RBIs.
For Georgia, Caitlyn Glenn tripled and scored twice, while Lauren Rodriguez had a double and three RBIs.
FIELDER(S) OF THE DAY: North Carolina's centerfielder Kaitlin Sanders made three catches in the game, including two solid stretched-out, running snares in the first and third innings. Georgia's Jessica Perschka showed her range as the shortstop raced toward the foul line in shallow leftfield in the third inning.
PITCHER OF THE DAY: Tennessee's Jodie King threw a complete game, two-hitter in the team's 8-0 win. King had eight strikeouts.
