GARNETT TO CELTS; TEIXEIRA TO BRAVES

MAKING NEWS

Two big names seem set to join new teams. Kevin Garnett, above left, among the NBA's best players, reportedly will be traded from the Timberwolves to the Celtics (6C). Meanwhile, Mark Teixeira, among baseball's best players involved in deadline rumors, reportedly will be traded from the Rangers to the Braves (3C).

NHL reportedly talking to ESPN

The NHL and ESPN are discussing airing games on ESPN2 starting in 2008-09, the SportsBusiness Journal reported. The two parted ways after the lockout ended in 2005. NBC holds an option for 2008-09 as part of a revenue-sharing deal. Versus, which reaches about 20-million fewer homes than ESPN2, is paying $70-million annually through 2011. But SportsBusiness Journal reported it is willing to discuss issues such as a lower fee, better games and contract extension.

OUT OF BOUNDS

2,632 games? That's nothing

Cal Ripken entered the Hall of Fame on Sunday partially for playing 2,632 straight games. One of his guests in Cooperstown topped that. Ernie Tyler worked 3,769 straight home games (since 1960) as the Orioles' umpire attendant before Saturday. "I saw him when he was 12 years old," Tyler, 83, said. "The streak doesn't mean that much when you're thinking about your relationship with the Ripken family." Tyler's most serious health issues - liver cancer, hernia, gall bladder removal - came during offseasons. "God's been on my side, I guess," he said.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"I hurt for him. I empathize with him because I hear people saying he should take the year off, to forget about football and focus on his legal troubles. But football is what got him through everything - everything! It got him out of where he grew up, out of the hood, out of the ghetto. Football has always been the sanctuary."
