ST. PETERSBURG DEBATE MAY STILL HAPPEN, BUT LATER

After a weekend spent in crisis mode, organizers of the CNN/YouTube GOP presidential debate seemed more optimistic Monday about the future of the St. Petersburg event. It just may not happen on Sept. 17, as first thought. CNN and the Republican Party of Florida are now floating possible new dates to the Republican field. "People want to make a way to make this happen," said St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker, who spoke with several campaigns over the weekend. A new date has not been set, but a date in November or December may be likely. September is seemingly out, and Republican presidential debates are already scheduled in Florida for October and January. Florida's primary is Jan. 29.

Spring Hill soldier killed in Iraq

Pfc. Cody C. Grater, 20, of Spring Hill was killed Sunday when his guard position was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade near Baghdad, the Defense Department said Monday. Grater, a paratrooper, was a driver with the 82nd Airborne Division. "Our son died doing what he was proud of," said Grater's mother, Anita D. Lewis, and stepfather, Larry L. Decker, in a statement. "It was his goal to make the Army his career, which he loved. He was proud of serving his country." Grater joined the Army in April 2006. His awards include a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. "He was eager to learn and excelled at all aspects of his chosen profession," Lt. Jason Gardel said. "Pfc. Grater always went the extra mile to help out his comrades."
