Defensive lineman Kevin Carter hasn't missed a game in his previous 12 NFL seasons. That amazing fact got us thinking: What's the worst injury he has played with? We were nearly sorry we asked.
Carter said he once was up all night before a game because of discomfort stemming from something called compartment syndrome, which was Greek to us.
According to webmd.com, it's a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment to prevent permanent damage to muscle, bones and other tissue. Symptoms of compartment syndrome include: weakness and paleness in the affected extremity; swelling and numbness; severe pain during movement and the inability to move an extremity.
Add coach Jon Gruden's vocal cords to the list of training camp injuries. After calling plays and shouting instructions - and perhaps a few other choice words - for three days, Gruden's voice was reduced to a raspy whisper Monday. His bark was noticeably absent during the morning workout, and his post-practice session with reporters was cut short. His rehab includes honey and cough drops. His voice is day to day.
Left tackle Luke Petitgout owns a farm at the base of the Blue Mountains, 20 miles north of Reading, Pa. Bela Vista Farm operates a shade tree nursery, produces high-quality hay and manages a Black Angus cattle herd. It also houses corporate retreats. And yes, Petitgout has been known to pitch in. "Hay season can get a little busy around there," he said. Check out the Web site: Belavistafarm.com.
Aches and pains
Linebacker Derrick Brooks (hamstring) was limited. Receiver Maurice Stovall left early to receive fluids but returned to do extra work after practice.
