CLOCK'S RUNNING TO SIGN UP FOR SCHOOL, BUS RIDES

School starts in less than three weeks and school officials want to remind parents of several key requirements. First, any parent who has yet to register their child for school this year should call the district as soon as possible at 587-2020. For bus riders: Postcards are being mailed this week to 69,000 eligible students with bus stop locations, pickup and return times. The call center is open to questions 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. now through the first several weeks of school. The first day of school is Aug. 21.

Let's just hope the fish will play along

The 59th annual Fish-a-thon takes place Saturday at Lake Jorgensen, behind the Main Library at 37th Street and Ninth Avenue N. The free event starts at 9 a.m. and is for children ages 3 to 12. Registration starts at 8 a.m.; judging is at 11:15 a.m. A cane pole and live bait will be provided. Information: 893-7441.

Kids can swing by golf skills challenge

The ninth annual Mutual of Omaha Drive, Putt and Chip Challenge is Saturday at the Mangrove Bay Golf Course, 875 62nd Ave. NE. The free event is for children ages 7 to 14. Information: www.thefirstteestpetersburg.org or 893-7800.

Photo hike focuses on wildlife, plants

Register now for a free photography hike at the Weedon Island Preserve on Sunday. The free two-hour hike, which starts at 8 a.m., will highlight wildlife and plants. Register by calling 453-6500. The Weedon Island Preserve is at 1800 Weddon Drive NE., St. Petersburg.
