Petey gets a reward from handler Marie Conrad after he came to her when he was called during an SPCA training class in Largo. Volunteers train dogs and let them earn a Canine Good Citizenship award. The program also tries to educate the public that pit bullterriers are not an inherently bad breed and when raised responsibly can be wonderful companions. Participants must pass a 10- step test, including accepting a friendly stranger, walking calmly in a crowd and coming when called. More information: www.SPCATampaBay.org or (727) 586-3591, ext. 167.
