PHCC TRUSTEE BOARD ELECTS NEW CHAIRMAN

NEW PORT RICHEY

Irvin Homer of Spring Hill has been elected chairman of the district board of trustees at Pasco-Hernando Community College. Homer, a retired school administrator and teacher, also serves on the boards of Hernando County Head Start and Pasco Hernando Early Learning Coalition. He was named citizen of the year by the Greater Hernando County Chamber of Commerce in 2003, the same year he joined the PHCC board. His vice chairman will be Thomas Weightman of Dade City, former superintendent of the Pasco County schools and former chief executive officer of the Florida Association of District School Superintendents.

Donate to fill up school backpacks

Organizers report an urgent need for cash donations for Operation Backpack, which will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Jerome Brown Community Center, 99 Jerome Brown Place. The event provides backpacks filled with school supplies to children in kindergarten through eighth grade. The goal is to provide more than 2,000 free backpacks. Workshop teaches grant-writing tips Coldwell Banker and Schraut and Associates will present a grant-writing workshop from 5 to 10 p.m. Aug. 9 at the Jerome Brown Community Center, 99 Jerome Brown Place. The instructor will be Barbara Sweinburg. Seating is limited to 60. The tax-deductible cost is $30, which will benefit the Education Foundation of Hernando County. Call Rose Atkins, 346-6545.
