WAR CHILD

Published Aug. 5, 2007

William Flomo is one of thousands of former child soldiers trying to reinvent themselves in the new Liberia. Kidnapped and drafted into a rebel army as a youngster, he now works hard in school. Here, he gets ready for class while his girlfriend dresses their baby. "You must first of all know that I never wanted to fight," he said. "I was fighting to defend myself. Because if I didn't fight, they would kill me." In Perspective To view a narrated slide show and listen to William Flomo, go to opinion.tampabay.com
