The Republican Club of Wellington will host an Old Time Country Hoedown from 6 to 10 p.m. Sept. 15 at Wellington Clubhouse, 400 Wexford Blvd.

A cash bar with cocktails will be at 6 p.m., followed by a barbecue buffet at 6:30 p.m. There will be old-fashioned square dancing.

Law library panel seeks members

The Hernando County Commission is accepting applications from individuals to serve on the Hernando County Law Library Committee. There are two vacancies on the committee.

The purpose of the Law Library Committee is to maintain and operate the Law Library, which is in the Hernando County Courthouse. By maintaining the library, the committee ensures that attorneys and pro se litigants have equal access to current legal information.

Applicants must be active members in good standing of the Florida Bar Association, as well as residents and registered voters of Hernando County.

Application forms are available in the County Administrator's Office, 20 N Main St., Brooksville, and must be returned before 5 p.m. Aug. 20. All positions are voluntary and unpaid. For information, call 754-4002.


Boating classes are on the horizon

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer the following upcoming classes:

- America's Boating Course, 7 to 9:30 p.m. Aug. 21-23. This is a basic course that satisfies the requirements needed to be issued a Florida Boating Safety ID card. The cost is $30.

- Navigating with GPS, 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 11 and 13. Those who own a GPS should bring it. It is recommended that those who don't own a GPS refrain from purchasing one until after taking this class. The cost is $35.

- Weather and Boating, 9 to 11 a.m. Sept. 15. This course includes basic weather information. Participants will learn how the weather affects one's decisions on go-no-go situations. The cost is $10.

- Boating Skills and Seamanship, 7 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 5-Oct. 24. The cost is $50.

All classes are at the auxiliary's building, 4340 Calienta St. For information, call John at 686-9582. The auxiliary also offers free vessel safety checks. The checks can be done wherever the boat is kept, whether at home, at a ramp or dock. To schedule a safety check, call Jackie at 666-7239.

Annual Fur Ball to help Humane Society's pets

Sponsorships and donations of auction items are available for the Humane Society of the Nature Coast's fourth annual Fur Ball, which will be Sept. 29 at the Palace Grand, 275 Della Court.

The event will begin with a cocktail hour and cash bar from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner of a buffet to include a vegetarian grill, angel hair pasta, apple and almond-stuffed chicken and roasted pork tenderloin. Dessert will be included. A silent auction will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Music for dancing will be provided by Cover to Cover and there will be a show featuring the 4 Non-Breeders. Tickets to the ball are $75 per person. All proceeds will benefit the homeless pets at the local Humane Society.
