The School Board will discuss the district's proposed 2008-09 student assignment plan in a workshop at 10:45 a.m. Thursday in the conference hall of the administration building, 301 Fourth St. SW in Largo. The public is welcome to attend, but audience presentations are not allowed. Community meetings will be scheduled throughout the county before the board votes on the plan Nov. 13. The plan would close some schools, create an assignment system that puts children in schools near their homes, increase the number of fundamental schools and realign schools to increase the number of attendance areas for elementary, middle and high schools. Mailed powder spurs evacuation
The third floor of the city's Municipal Services Building was evacuated Tuesday morning after an employee opened an envelope containing a "white powdery substance," said Clearwater Fire Rescue spokeswoman Elizabeth Daly-Watts. About 75 employees were allowed to return to the floor an hour and a half later, after preliminary tests by a county hazardous materials team determined that the substance wasn't harmful, Daly-Watts said. An employee in the city's finance department opened an Express Mail envelope and found a sealed plastic bag containing the powder. There was no letter in the envelope. It appears the package may have been mailed to the wrong address. The envelope was delivered to the Municipal Service Building's at 100 S Myrtle Ave. but was addressed to a graphic design company at 1001 S Myrtle Ave.
