Following his graduation from Dreher H.S. in Columbia, he served in the U.S. Marines and attended the University of South Carolina. Captain Criddle's passion was flying, and his career spanned 40 years beginning with 17 years at Braniff International Airlines as a flight engineer, co-pilot, captain, and an FAA designee on the B727. At Piedmont Airlines, he served as pilot instructor, check pilot and captain. U.S. Airways was his final employer, and he retired as captain on the B737 and pilot instructor for the Federal Administration Review Program. He often spoke of the pleasure of taking off at dawn, climbing through the clouds, and breaking out into the sunshine. As day turned to night, he found himself looking down at the lighted towns and cities, wondering about the lives of those living there. He was proud of flying for more than 40 years and never putting as much as a scratch on an airplane. In retirement, he turned his interest to boating, fishing, planting citrus trees and flowering shrubs throughout his yard, and indulging his insatiable thirst for knowledge through reading and visiting places of historical significance. He lived every day of his life to the fullest, honorably and courageously, always maintaining his self confidence and motivating others to do the same in tough situations. He was generous to friends, family, strangers, and causes in which he believed. He cared for friends and family during their illnesses, always showing great compassion and love. His quick and ready smile was contagious, and his friendships strong and loyal. Those whose lives he touched were happier, more fulfilled, and more complete. He will be sorely missed, and loved always. Donations may be made to the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund: (please include "In Memory of George Taylor Criddle".) Thank you for taking the time to honor this great man on his final flight.
