Hernando County Recreation is accepting registrations for the following new classes:

- Qi-Yoga classes, 8 to 9 a.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. This is a noncompetitive activity and is intended to help the body relax while gaining strength, balance and flexibility. These slow, gentle movements promote health and healing. All levels of ability are welcome. The instructor is Dr. Richard Klein, who is an acupuncture physician and doctor of Oriental medicine. The cost is $8 per class or $45 per month.

- Cartoon Drawing, 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays. The instructor is Dennis Graves. The cost is $35 for a four-week session.

Both classes are at Delta Woods Park, 3400 Deltona Blvd.

The Recreation Department also offers classes in acting, baton, cheerleading, lacrosse, quilting, tae kwon do, adult flag football, softball and volleyball. For information, call the Recreation Department at 754-4031.


PHCC special classes set for two campuses

Pasco-Hernando Community College is accepting registration for the following classes at its Spring Hill Center, 11245 Spring Hill Drive:

- AIDS Seminar, 6 to 10 p.m. Feb. 12. Another class will be offered March 11.

- CPR, 6 to 9 p.m. March 18 and 25.

Registration is being taken for the following classes at the PHCC North Campus, 11415 Ponce de Leon Blvd., Brooksville:

- Computer Basics II, 7 to 9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, Feb. 11-20.

- AIDS Seminar, 6 to 10 p.m. Feb. 20.

- CPR, 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 20 and 27.

Master gardeners available for questions

Residents are encouraged to bring questions about landscaping and gardening to volunteer master gardeners who are with the Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service. The master gardeners are available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays at the Forest Oaks Government Center, 7479 Forest Oaks Blvd., Spring Hill, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at the extension office, 19490 Oliver St., Brooksville. Sweet Adelines show slated for Saturday

Suncoast Harmony Chorus, the west-central Florida chapter of Sweet Adelines International, will present its 21st annual show, Sweet 'n Swinging, at 2 p.m.Saturday at the Center for the Arts at River Ridge, 11646 Town Center Road.

The show will include a variety of music from ballads to toe-tappers, gospel to comedy, as well as a patriotic segment. The Encore Swing Band will also perform.

Tickets are $12 and can be purchased in advance by sending a check to the chorus, along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Cindy LaPorte, 14275 Brookridge Blvd., Brooksville, FL 34613. There also will be a limited number of tickets at the box office on the day of the show. Seats are not reserved.

Suncoast Harmony Chorus, which is under the direction of certified director Amy Riddle, is a women's barbershop chorus that performs four-part harmony, a cappella style. For information, call Cindy at 597-4376.


Brick sponsors sought for VFW memorial

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10209 invites veterans, businesses and anyone interested to sponsor a brick for a memorial pond and freedom walk that will be built at the post's new home at14736 Edward R. Noll Drive, off Anderson Snow Road.

Bricks are $50, which includes the cost of engraving. The memorial will include the brick memorial wall, a flag walkway, fountains, railings, bushes and floodlights. The idea came from post member "Wild" Bill Taylor.

McCollum to speakat DAR luncheon

Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum will speak at the Annuttaliga Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution's luncheon meeting at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 18 at the Brooksville Country Club at Majestic Oaks, 23446 Links Drive (off Croom Road).

McCollum will speak about the state Cyber Crime Unit, which targets child pornography and pedophile problems on the Internet.

A limited number of tickets will be available. The cost is $13 (with $1 benefiting the DAR's Hernando County Scholarship Fund).

Florida-friendly landscaping class Feb. 27

The 2008 Florida-Friendly Landscaping Grow Smart Workshop and Natural Landscaping Expo will be from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Feb. 27 at the SNPJ Lodge, 13383 County Line Road.

The program will be presented by the Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service/Florida Yards and Neighborhoods Program, Southwest Florida Water Management District and Hernando County Utilities Department.

The workshop will feature numerous speakers and cover a wide range of topics, including an exhibit from the Hernando Chapter of the Native Plant Society and local vendors. There will be door prizes, refreshments and educational materials.

The cost is $10. Registration is limited and will be accepted on a first-paid, first-registered basis through Feb. 22. HCUD customers who prepay and attend the workshop will be eligible for a $10 rebate (one rebate per account).
