COUPLES MARK SIX DECADES, BEYOND

Carl and Joann Taylor of Dunedin were married Nov. 5, 1947, in Oakwood, Va., and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary recently at an afternoon dinner with family.

The couple moved to Dunedin in 1978 from Troy, Mich., where Mr. Taylor retired from the Excello Corp. and Mrs. Taylor worked for Great Scott Grocery Store.

Mr. Taylor likes to attend antique car shows.

Mrs. Taylor is a member of a Dunedin bowling league.

Both are members of Countryside Cathedral Church of God in Safety Harbor.

They have two daughters, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Glendle and Cenie Neal of Clearwater celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Oct. 13, 2007, with family and friends at the Boizao Steakhouse in Tampa.

The couple were married Oct. 11, 1947, by a justice of the peace in Rossville, Ga.

They lived in Albany, Ky., until 1955, and came to Clearwater in 1978 from New Castle, Ind.

Mr. Neal retired from the Chrysler Corp. in New Castle, where he also built homes and apartments.

From 1978 to 1982, Mr. and Mrs. Neal owned the Sandpiper Motel on Clearwater Beach.

Mr. Neal has been a Mason for more than 50 years.

The Neals are active members of Calvary Baptist Church in Clearwater.

The couple have a son and two grandchildren.

Dominick and Maria Vanore of Palm Harbor were married Jan. 4, 1958, at Our Lady of Pompei in Patterson, N.J., and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a cruise to the Mediterranean and a five-day stay in Tuscany.

Mr. Vanore is a veteran of the Korean War and a member of the American Legion. He was employed by Matrix, a medical electronics company, as national service manager.

Mrs. Vanore was employed by Meadox Medicals.

They moved to this area in May 1986 from Ringwood, N.J.

Mr. and Mrs. Vanore are of the Christian faith.

They enjoy working out at Bally's.

The couple have a son and a grandson.

Allan and Ann McGregor celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary at their Clearwater home with family and friends.

They were married Jan. 12, 1938, in the First Community Church in Columbus, Ohio.

Mr. McGregor was a sales executive with Ford Motor Co.

The couple came here in 1970 from Springfield, Ohio.

They are Episcopalians.

Mr. McGregor, 97, and Mrs. McGregor, 93, are active in country clubs up north.

The couple have three daughters, Janet Grafflin, Springfield, Nancy Nowak, Xenia, Ohio, and Ruth Glover, Naples, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Andy and Freida Kowalski of Largo celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary at their daughter's home with family members.

The couple were wed Jan. 7, 1938, in Oswego, N.Y.

Mr. Kowalski wasa tool and die maker.

Mrs. Kowalski was a hairdresser and owner of Salon Tiara Beauty.

They moved here in November 1957 from Oswego.

Mr. Kowalski is a member of Pinecrest Golf Club, Largo and played the game until he was 90.

Mrs. Kowalski, a talented artist, belongs to the Largo Art Association.

Both are members of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Largo.

They have three children, two granddaughters and five great-grandchildren.

Sterling Society honors arts pioneers

Nearly forty years ago, the concept of an art center in Northern Pinellas began to materialize due to the efforts of a dedicated group of visionaries.

The Sterling Society of the Dunedin Fine Art Center recently honored those cultural enthusiasts at a lunch Jan. 12.

The guest list included Meta Brown, Ruth Bessmer, Joan Crook, Syd Entel, Gil Freeman, Nancy Frierson, Roz Glisson, Louis Gould, Vivien Skinner Grant, Jeanette Hale, Shirley Heine, Dot Littlejohn Leschot, Pat Lloveras, Betty Jean Moore, Joyce Mullett, Barbara Nielsen, Cynthia Nilson, Betty Proefke, Wray Register, Pat Riley, Yvonne White, Ginny Hood Williams and Charlotte Wright.

PHU student wins VFW essay contest

Marissa Lyons, 15, was recently awarded first place in the Voice of Democracy competition by both Palm Harbor Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1658 and Florida VFW District 21 for her written speech and recorded oral presentation on the theme "How You Would Honor an American Veteran."

The Palm Harbor University High School student was presented with a congratulatory letter and certificate from state Rep. Tom Anderson with cash rewards and a paid trip to Orlando to have dinner with other Florida VFW District winners.

Family celebratestwo very special days

Donald and Janet Ormrod of Tarpon Springs recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary at home with family and friends.

Mr. and Mrs. Ormrod, both natives of Worcester, Mass., were married there on Jan. 31, 1953, at Trinity Lutheran Church.

After serving in the Marine Corps, Mr. Ormrod received degrees from the University of Massachusetts and Southern Connecticut State College in New Haven. He worked as a physical education director in three YMCAs early in his career and retired after 25 years on the faculty of the University of New Haven in the department of athletics and physical education.

Mrs. Ormrod is a homemaker.

Mr. Ormrod is involved in many Tampa Bay civic organizations, and both are active in their mobile home community, where they serve as committee and special event volunteers.

The couple are in good health and regularly visit with their five children, 20 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, as well as Mr. Ormrod's mother, Irene Ormrod of Tarpon Springs.

And speaking of Irene Ormrod, the Tarpon Springs resident recently celebrated her 100th birthday with friends and family, many coming from out of state.

Irene Blanche Quillia was born Feb. 6, 1908, in Worcester, Mass., the only child of William and Delvica Quillia, themselves Worcester natives.

After graduating from high school, Mrs. Ormrod taught piano for 25 years at her home.

She was married in Worcester on Aug. 4, 1926, to James A. Ormrod, who worked for many years as a YMCA physical director, and after a career change, retired in 1969 as chief metallurgist at the New England High Carbon Wire Co. in Millbury, Mass.

Mrs. Ormrod was a homemaker and an officer in the Republican Club of Worcester County. She and her husband were active in the Order of the Eastern Star, achieving the high honor of Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron for the state of Massachusetts.

The couple came here in 1970 from Worcester.

They enjoyed traveling and visited many foreign countries. In their travel trailer, they toured the United States until Mr. Ormrod's death in 1988.

For the past 14 years, Mrs. Ormrod has maintained her own home in Tarpon Springs. She enjoys good health and takes daily walks.

When asked for her secret to longevity, she will always say, "a positive attitude!"

She has two sons, Donald R. Ormrod of Tarpon Springs and the late Russell A. Ormrod, and has five grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three-great-great-grandchildren.
