GIFTED CENTER AT EXPLORER K-8 IS APPROVED

COUNTYWIDE

The Hernando County School Board on Tuesday voted 4-1 to move a planned gifted education center from Challenger K-8 School of Science and Mathematics to the new Explorer K-8 off Northcliffe Boulevard. aDistrict staff and Superintendent Wayne Alexander spoke against the move, saying the Challenger location would disrupt fewer students since many gifted children already attend the school. But board members Sandra Nicholson and John Sweeney said the new program would disrupt Challenger's magnet program, and result in more crowded classrooms than at the new school. Member Jim Malcolm cast the lone dissenting vote, after a reluctant Pat Fagan supported the move to keep the gifted program on its tight schedule to open this August.
