MAN, 37, SHOT, KILLED IN HOME; CALL TO POLICE COMES LATE

ST. PETERSBURG

A 37-year-old man was killed in his home in Childs Park Wednesday afternoon.

Keith W. Sovey died after he was shot about 12:45 p.m. at 4445 17th Ave. S, police said. But no one called authorities until 1:10 p.m.

"It's unsettling," said T.J. White, 26, the manager of a nearby rental property that is undergoing renovation.

By Wednesday evening, details of the killing remained unclear. Police did not have any suspects and had not identified a motive for the slaying. Sovey does not have a significant criminal record in Florida.

Sovey lived in a small, shabby white-colored home with a weedy front yard. The Christmas lights were still up.

Dwayne Broad, 31, was working with a power saw around the time of the shooting, but didn't hear anything. He said a stream of cars and people often came to Sovey's home.
