MARKING LENT'S BEGINNING

Theresa Metcalf, 70, receives ashes from the Right Rev. Abbot Isaac Camacho, O.S.B., during Ash Wednesday services at Saint Leo Abbey. Metcalf and husband, John, 78, at left, were among Catholics across the bay area who attended Wednesday's holy day of obligation, marking the beginning of the Lenten season.
