SPECIAL OLYMPICS

Hernando County Special Olympics athlete Mark Swiconek of Spring Hill took part in the third Special Olympics Florida Athlete Congress in Tallahassee recently. It was Swiconek's third time representing the county at the congress, a forum where delegates with intellectual disabilities from throughout the state work to recommend policy and set direction for the Special Olympics movement. Here, he presents his committee's pros and cons on issue No. 4, advancement to state competition, on the floor of the Senate.

Tips from the pros

Former Major League Baseball outfielder Ron LeFlore, known for stealing bases, talks about baserunning at the second annual MLB Youth Clinic at Tom Varn Park in Brooksville. LeFlore, who spent nine seasons with the Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers and Montreal Expos, was an All-Star in 1976 with the Tigers.

Bob Forsch was one of five Major League Baseball alumni at the clinic. Forsch, who pitched in the majors for 16 seasons and had two no-hitters, went 168-136 playing for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Houston Astros.
