OBITUARIES

AGNESS, Elizabeth "Betty" 77, of Largo, passed away Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008, at Suncoast Hospital. She was born in Scottsville, NY, and was a geriatric nurse from 1963-1976 when she became owner and president of Monroe Extinguisher Co. in Rochester until 1985, when she moved to Florida. Betty was a member of Anona United Methodist Church and volunteered as an emergency room nurse at Suncoast Hospital from 1985 until December of 2007. She is survived by her loving family including her son, Richard (Hilda) Grantman; beloved granddaughter, Kristine Grantman, all of Rochester; brother, Herman (Shirley) Yahn and family, of Scottsville, NY; her stepchildren, Laura (Dennis) Morrison, of WA state, and Wil (Lynne) Clow Jr. and family, of Oregon. Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2008, at 11 am, at Moss Feaster Funeral Home, 13401 Indian Rocks Road, Largo. ARD, Frieda J. 78, of St. Petersburg, passed away Feb. 12, 2008, at Kindred Hospital in St. Petersburg. She is survived by her loving family.

BASEY, James F. 77, of New Port Richey, died Feb. 9, 2008. Basey was the only child of Paul & Marie Basey, who predeceased him. Originally from Indianapolis, Basey was a retired professional jazz musician. He is survived by 5 children, Skip, Dickie, Bobbie, Jimmy, and Jeane; 8 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; his extended family, Pat, Reta, Quinn; and many other loved and loving friends.

BATTLES, Reginald born in Jacksonville, Feb. 18, 1958, to the late Louise Williams and Walter Battles passed away Feb. 11, 2008, at Bayfront Medical Center. He attended Bethune Cookman College, where he met his wife of 13 years, Desiree Britt Battles. BAUGH, Robert Hargrett 76, of Heflin, AL, formerly of St. Petersburg, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008, at Regional Medical Center. He was born on July 30, 1931, in Georgia. He was a flight instructor. Survivors include his wife, Rosa Chandler Baugh, Heflin, FL; daughter, Teresa Furman, Pinellas Park; 3 sons, Kenneth Baugh, Pinellas Park, James Baugh, Wellington, AL, and Eric Baugh, Berkekey, CA; 2 stepsons, Randy Chandler, Ellserry, MO, & Bryan Chandler, Troy, MO; 8 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. BUTLER, Louise B. 84, of St. Petersburg, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008. She was born in Penfield, IL, and came here with her husband in 1972 after he retired from the Air Force. She attended the Pinellas Park Church of Christ and she loved to play Golf and Bridge. She is survived by 2 brothers, Gordon Buck, of St. Petersburg and Bernie Buck, of Danville, IL; 7 nieces, Laurie (Buck) Barlik, Jan (Bohannon) Killi-brew, Susan (Bohannon) Johnson, Carolyn (Buck) Rodman, Marilyn (Buck) Kelly, Patty (Buck) Pinder and Julia Cribbs; and 4 nephews, Joe and Larry Buck, and Phil and Bill Thomas. CUSHING, Rev. Emilia Cara passes away peacefully and went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008. As the daughter of Anthony and Angela de Bernardo, she was born June 18, 1921, in New Jersey. She grew up living in Brooklyn, Jersey City, Staten Island and New York City. She moved to this area with her now predeceased parents and husband in 1969. She is now survived only by her brother, Edgardo de Bernardo. Emilia was an international concert pianist, composer and teacher. She studied at The Juilliard School and with Paul von Wittgenstein (for whom Ravel composed the Concerto for the Left Hand) and Claudio Arrau. She made her debut at Town Hall in 1947. She performed at Carnegie Hall and was on concert tours throughout France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Canada and the United States. Emilia also was a Pastor and felt very close to God's Holy Words and accepted Jesus Christ and her Savior. DANIELS, George H. Sr. 75, of Clearwater, died Sunday, Feb. 10, at Morton Plant Hospital, following an extended illness. He was former owner of Daniels Pest Management of Clearwater. George was born in Louisa, KY, to the late Elon and Della Daniels. FILLEY, Errol Ramon 92, found eternal peace on Feb. 11, 2008. He was married for 61 years to his loving wife Margaret L., who passed away in 2003. He leaves behind to remember with eternal love and gratitude for a life well lived his daughter, Susan A. Tokarchick; cherished grandsons, Jason (Meredith), Justin (Beth) and Colin (Jayne) McNeeley; and his two beloved great-grandchildren, Kaia & Preston McNeeley. Errol and Margaret relocated to St. Petersburg in 1992 from their native, Cleveland, OH, where Errol was one of eight children, of Alfred and Alice Filley (nee Pejeau.) Sisters, Doris, Jeanne and Anita; and brothers, Alfred, Leo, and Eugene, all preceded him in death, with sister, Loretta G. Kovar, of Dunedin surviving. After serving in WWII as an aerial gunner in the Army Air Force, Errol returned home and began what was to become a 33-year long career at the Accurate Die Casting Co., from which he retired as president. HART, John Oliver (Simmons) 79, died Jan. 16, 2008. He was born on July 29, 1929, in Suffolk, VA. He had been under the care of Suncoast Hospice and Bon Sec-ours in St. Petersburg, as well as under his children's care since August 2007. John Hart graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1950. He first came to Florida in 1957 with his young family and settled in Clearwater. In 1964, he & his wife & 7 children moved to St. Petersburg. He worked for Rutenburg Homes for 10 years as a salesman, sales manager, and general manager of the St. Petersburg Division. He then worked in Tampa in automobile sales until retirement. As a young man, he often imagined himself as "sitting at the head of the table with his large family around him." He had that. He was a genial and gentle father. His children and their families live around the country in Florida, California, Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico. May God bless his soul.

Robert, the son of Burnett Vanderkloot and Kenneth Higbee, was born on April 23, 1933, in Lake Forest, IL. He graduated from Lake Bluff High School in 1946 and Dartmouth College/Tuck School in 1954. Robert served in the U.S. Air Force as an instructor and fighter pilot during the Korean War. He owned and managed Higbee Associates in Rowayton, CT, and created Yourjobsearcher.com. Robert is survivided by his 3 children, William Higbee, of St. Petersburg, Annie Higbee, of Owls Head, ME, Thomas Higbee, of Owls Head, ME; and 4 grandchildren, Stephen, Alex, Mazlin and Cecile. JOHNSON, Harold "Duke" age 56, of Largo, passed away suddenly on Feb. 10, 2008. Duke was born on April 18, 1951, in Chicago, IL, to Harold and Joan Johnson. He was a caring husband and a loving father. Duke enjoyed planning trips for his wife and him to take on their 2006 Ultra Classic Harley Davidson. He also enjoyed photography and the outdoors. KAVAKOS, Becky longtime resident of St. Petersburg, passed away Feb. 12, 2008, at Palms of Pasadena Hospital. She was born in Brooklyn, NY and moved here with her family as a young child. She was a beautiful young woman who won many beauty titles. She was often used as a model by the Chamber of Commerce in advertisements to promote tourism. Becky was a designer of fine jewelry and co-owner of Gold and Diamond Finger Jewelers in Madeira Beach. Her parents, Anna and Sam Kavakos owned Sam's Restaurant at Central and 9th St. for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents as well as her sister Helen and brother Peter. She is survived by her longtime companion Kristofor Peters; her sister Mary; and nieces & nephews. MACON, Mattie C. "Sue" 76, of St. Petersburg, died on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008, at Bayfront Medical Center. She was born Nov. 25, 1931, in Camilla, GA, and moved to St. Petersburg in 1952. She was a member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church for over 52 years where she served as a Deaconess, sang in the choir and was an active member of the Missionary Society until her illness. MESSINGER, Maynard Allen 75, of Lake Alfred, Florida died Friday, Feb. 8, 2008. at Kindred Hospital in Tampa. Born May 14, 1932, to Frank E. Messinger and Hilda Sterner in Easton, Pa., he came here from Easton in 2007. He worked as a licensed electrician for Binney & Smith in Easton, was of the Protestant faith and was a veteran of the United States Navy. He is survived by his ex-wife, Evelyn Tomaino Messinger of St. Petersburg, four sons, David, Az. Joseph, Pa. Ronald, Lake Alfred, and Kevin, St. Petersburg; three brothers, and one sister.; 5 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren.

MICHEL, Jean C. 83, of Jacksonville, FL, died on Feb. 9, 2008. She is survived by 2 sisters; her 6 children; 6 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild. She resided in Palm Harbor for many years.

MINOR, Donald Jene 81, of St. Petersburg, passed away on Monday, Feb. 11, at Bay Pines Veteran's Hospital. Born Henry Eugene Baugh in Ellettsville, IN, on April 2, 1927. He was a WWII Army veteran. He was a member of Pinellas Daylight Lodge. Scottish Rite, and a 33rd degree Mason. He was also a member of the Eastern Star, Selama Grotto, St. Petersburg, American Legion-Madeira Beach Post 273. NEWMAN, Barbara P. Mangold 63, of Crystal River, died Feb. 10, 2008, at Seven Rivers Regional Medical Center. After many years spent in Saudi Arabia, she came here 10 years ago. She was born in April 17, 1944, the daughter of James and Elfrieda Papachriston. She enjoyed raising Scottish Terriers; crocheting and needle point, traveling, and cooking for family and friends. She was predeceased by her first husband, James Mangold, and mother, Elfrieda Papachriston. OLAYOS, Mary Lou 70, died Feb. 11, 2008, in St. Petersburg. She lived in Philip Benjamin Towers retirement center for 2½years. She was a previous resident of Bridgeport, CT. Beloved mother of Edward Olayos and wife, Carolyn, Colleen Olayos, Mindy Trujillo and husband, Orlando. PLOURDE, Charles Joseph 83, Zephyrhills, FL, passed away Jan. 10, 2008. He was born Feb. 8, 1925, in Lowell, MA. He formerly resided at Bay Drive, Springhill, FL. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII, became a disabled veteran, was a lifetime member of the VFW #8681 and past president of the American Legion post #247 in Tyngsboro, MA; he was a long term member of the Tyngsboro Sportsman's Club and the Order of The Elks. After working for the federal government at Hansom AFB, Bedford, MA, for 25 years and serving as a police officer for the town of Tyngsboro, MA, Charlie and his wife, Bernie retired to Florida. Charles was predeceased by his beloved wife of 61 years, Bernadette (Halligan); a son, Michael Plourde; his parents, Laura (Patnaude) and Alfred Joseph Plourde; and 3 brothers, Robert, Maurice and Rodger Plourde. PONKEY, Joseph L. Sr. 97, of Spring Hill (formerly of Royal Oak, MI), passed away Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008 at his home. He was preceded in death by his son Joseph L. SWERDLOW, Annalea Loud died on Feb. 9, 2008, at age 94, surrounded by her loving family at the home of her daughter Susan Gilbert in Houston, TX. She was born in Dayton, OH, in 1913 and lived in Weymouth, MA for 40 years and later for 32 years in Clearwater, FL, before moving to Houston to be near her daughter, Susan Gilbert. She was predeceased by her husbands, Colonel Jerome Swerdlow in 2006 and Dr. Norman Loud in 1989. TROWSSE, Ronald E. passed away Feb. 11, 2008, at the age of age 75. Born Feb. 9, 1933, in Highland Park, MI; he lived in Pinellas County for 38 years. TRUNK, Jean was born May, 20, 1906 in Rimouski, Canada and died Feb. 8, 2008 in Carmel, CA at the age of 101. She came to Chicago, IL at age 6 months with her family. She was 10th of 11 children born to Eleda & Albert du Pont. She lived in Chicago until her retirement at age 65 and then moved to Clearwater with her husband, John who died in 1976 at age 70. At the age of 92 she moved to Carmel, CA to be near her daughter Marilyn Borucki, who survives her. Jean is also survived by 3 granddaughters; 8 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. WRIGHT, Woodrow Wilson July 28, 1919 - Feb. 11, 2008 Our wonderful loving father passed away on Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, under the care of Hernando-Pasco Hospice after a long illness. Woodrow was much loved by his family. His loving wife of 67 years, Sarah Wright (nee Webb), passed away three years ago. They had six children. Three are deceased. They are David and his wife, Sherrill Wright, Stevie Wright and Marvin Wright. Surviving are daughter Betty (David) Spears (nee Wright), of Holiday; sons, Danny Wright, of Holiday, & Woodrow Wright Jr., of New Port Richey; and sister, Lucille McCoy, Tobaccoville, NC. There are four living grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces & nephews. Woodrow was of the Baptist faith. He was a proud lifelong member of the VFW and UMWA (United Mine Workers Association). Woodrow proudly served his country in World War II and was in the Battle of the Bulge under General Patton. He rarely talked about the war but talked more about it than he ever did during his last days on this earth. Woodrow was born and grew up in Kentucky and later lived in West Virginia, where he was a coal miner until he became disabled. He and Sarah lived in Florida since 1963. Visitation will be on Thursday, Feb. 14 from 6-8 pm with funeral services to follow on Feb. 15 at 10:30 am at Dobies Funeral Services at Holiday on Bartelt Road.
