Phil Mickelson seems determined to add Los Angeles to his collection of West Coast trophies.
A year after losing at Riviera in a playoff, Mickelson played golf as spectacular as the weather Friday in the Northern Trust Open, finishing with a 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole for 7-under 64 and a four-stroke lead.
Even after starting at 68, Mickelson felt he was close to putting his game together. It started with a 3-iron to 12 feet on the par-5 first for a simple birdie, built momentum with a 60-foot birdie on the fifth, and never slowed. When he finished his best score at Riviera, he was at 10-under 132.
"This is a tournament that has eluded me," Mickelson said of the only city in the West Coast PGA Tour swing where he hasn't won.
Robert Allenby shot 66 to put him at 136 with Jeff Quinney (67).
LPGA:Annika Sorenstam birdied five of the final seven holes for 5-under 67 and a share of the second-round lead with Erica Blasberg (68) at 7-under 137 in the Tour's season-opening SBS Open in Kahuku, Hawaii. Seminole's Brittany Lincicome shot 4-over 76, missing the cut with 6-over 150.
CHAMPIONS: Loren Roberts, Fuzzy Zoeller, Tom Kite and Bruce Fleisher shot 7-under 65s to share the first-round lead in the ACE Group Classic in Naples.
NATIONWIDE/AUSTRALASIAN: Rain washed out play again today in the New Zealand PGA Championship, forcing organizers to reduce the event to 36 holes. David Hearn, Darron Stiles and Matt Bettencourt share the first-round lead at 6-under 66.
MATCH PLAY: Tiger Woods will play J.B. Holmes in Wednesday's first round of the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship in Marana, Ariz.
